The Hamilton-Coleraine Rail Trail lies within a Conservation & Recreation Reserve managed by the Hamilton-Coleraine Rail Reserve Committee of Management Inc. (HCRRC), a voluntary committee appointed every 3 years by the Victorian Department of Energy, Environment and Climate Action (DEECA). The committee is responsible for the protection and maintenance of the entire 37 kms of the reserve. It contains remnant and regenerating flora including magnificent specimens of the River Red Gum trees (Eucalyptus camaldulensis) in beautiful vistas of the Victorian Volcanic Plains (VVP). There are also remnant patches of rarer flora including fine examples of native grasslands, Orchids and Featherheads; it is a wildlife refuge and corridor, the home of very rare Legless Lizards, many bird species, marsupials and insects. The walking &: cycling Trail itself utilises the old railway which was closed in 1976 and is constantly being improved for public access. Safety and convenience being priorities attracting tourists, visitors and families for the healthy enjoyable experences of exercise, relaxation, sightseeing, photography and nature study.
